Surprisingly, the correct way to install curtains

The World of Curtains You Don't Know

Do you think curtains are easy?

But in fact, curtains are a surprisingly deep world!

For decoration around windows, there is the traditional Japanese shoji paper sliding door.

In modern Western architecture, there are a variety of options in terms of use and design, including roll screens, blinds with horizontal wings, vertical blinds, roll screens, and curtains.

This project is an example of replacing curtains that are 20 years old.

This customer's curtains have faded with age and repeated washing,

The length of the curtains had shrunk and they had become tarnished.

The curtains in the hallway at the exit had also shrunk in length, leaving a gap of about 5 cm from the floor.

About the function of the curtains

Curtains do more than just blindfold people from the outside; they also serve a variety of functions, such as blocking light, blocking heat, and providing a relaxing decorative feature.

Curtains that are too short will allow heat to escape and make you cold in winter.

In summer, heat from the sun will also come in.

Therefore, it makes sense to order the exact length.

Selecting fabric and color for curtains

In this case, the customer wanted shades of gray.

However, we suggested a fabric that was not simply a neutral gray, but rather a well-balanced mix of warm and cool colors in a gray base color.

It would be ideal if the curtains could be changed every season, but it would cost twice or three times the budget.

That is why we proposed a fabric that is not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter.

About curtain rails

This time, the customer wanted to reuse the original curtain rails.

However, the brackets that support the ⬆️ curtain rail were broken or missing in some places, so we installed new brackets.

The curtains have a right and left side!

By the way, did you know that curtains have left and right sides?

You can find the label on the bottom right or bottom left of the curtains as shown in the picture above ⬆️.

The one on the bottom right is the right side.

The one on the bottom left is the left side.

This is an important point to remember!

So why do curtains have a left and right side?

In sewing curtains, the pattern is aligned in the center and then joined and sewn together on the left and right sides.

Therefore, if the left and right sides are reversed, the patterns will not match in the center.

In most cases, curtains are made in the "Nakabiraki" style, which opens from the center to the left or right. In rare cases, a narrow window may be made with a one-piece opening.

⬆️The one I am pointing at in the photo above,

The one I am pointing to in the photo above is called a magnetic runner,

This is where you can open the curtains to the left or right.

So when you hang the curtains,

First, the right curtain is hung from the right magnetic runner.

The left curtain is hung from the left magnetic runner as well.

How to hang curtains properly, as taught by a professional

The best way to hang a curtain is to hang it with one hand,

The key is to hang it with one hand. ‼︎

Use the weight of the curtain to apply tension to the runner and hooks while pulling the curtain to prevent it from coming off.

My 30 year career speaks for itself on this.

Trust me (laughs).

Put the first hook on the magnetic runner, then the next runner. If you do it one after another, you often run out of runners before you get to the last end cap.

When that happens, remove the end cap with a screwdriver and add the missing runner.

This curtain rail is a C-shaped rail made by Tosoh, which is the most popular type of curtain rail, so runners are easily available.

After adding the missing runner, attach the end caps.

Hook the hooks on the ends of the curtains to the rings on the end caps, and you are done. It all fits together perfectly and neatly. The house is a 200-year-old traditional Japanese building, and the fabric has a Japanese feel to it, so the curtains fit in beautifully without feeling out of place.
